A Sure Path To Economic Mobility
Raleigh, a College Advising Corps adviser at the University of Virginia, worked with Anna, encouraging her to pursue her dream work as a dental hygienist. English is Anna’s second language. Raleigh recommended that Anna take the English prerequisites and pursue an associate’s degree for added job security. Today, Anna is on the way to her dream job. Advisers at the University of Virginia understand that postsecondary education is the surest path to economic mobility. College Advising Corps found its start in 2005 at UVA. The program, then called College Guides, began by placing 14 recent UVA graduates in rural communities where college-going rates were below the state average. Today, the program is one of the largest in the country.
As an adviser, I am learning to serve others well. I see the systems of inequalities and various struggles faced by students. This fuels my passion to bring about change and advocate for all as well as provide resources and tools for others to advocate for themselves.Ludi Avagyan, Adviser
