Ties That Bind

Vanessa, a College Advising Corps adviser at UT Austin, serves at PSJA Memorial Early College High School. After receiving her college degree, she chose to help others overcome barriers to higher education. With Vanessa’s guidance, Selene, a senior at PSJA, chose to pursue a four-year degree in entrepreneurship. “My parents always told me that my education was the only thing that couldn’t be taken from me,” shares Vanessa. Established in 2011, the UT Austin program launched in 2010 with 15 advisers in 15 high schools. Today, the program supports students in Houston, San Antonio, and the Rio Grande Valley. Advisers foster inclusion and ignite a college-going culture within the schools they serve. This in turn creates a supportive and powerful connection between advisers and their students.

I've seen the lasting impact I’ve had on my students. Texas advisers are dedicating their all to ensuring every student is placed on the best path. We are making dreams a reality—all thanks to our program being in communities that need us the most. Gilbert Berrones, Adviser, La Joya High School
