Tailoring Opportunity
Charma had a clear goal when it came to life after high school. When she was a junior, she went to Karlina, a College Advising Corps adviser in Pennsylvania, and shared she wanted to pursue a degree in dairy science at a specific university. The pair worked together, looking at Charma’s grades and scores and assessing whether her dream school was in reach. Charma was initially disheartened when she learned she might not have the scores necessary. Nevertheless, the duo continued to look for other schools and, at Karlina’s urging, Charma visited multiple other universities. In the end, Charma applied to several schools, including her dream school. Today, Charma is a senior at her dream school and will receive her degree in dairy science in May. The Pennsylvania program is a joint venture between Franklin & Marshall College, Gettysburg College, and Millersville University. During 2020-2021, the program’s advisers served 5,772 seniors and increased family engagement by 16% over the previous year. Advisers know what their students are up against and are committed to helping their students achieve their postsecondary education goals.
I remember how much joy and support my adviser brought to me as a student. I had an ally that I could truly count on. Now as an adviser, I hope to be that person for the students I serve.Liz Steward, Adviser, Central Cambria High School
