A Role Model, A Champion, A Resource

Michelle, a College Advising Corps adviser at UConn, serves students attending Harding High School, an under-resourced school in Bridgeport. Last year, she worked with students who were not sure how to get started on college applications and financial aid forms. She held informational workshops as well as financial aid workshops. Michelle also visited classrooms and invited students to meet with her individually. She says she wants her students to know that she is available to them and an advocate and is dedicated to helping them “knock down barriers, achieve their educational goals, and succeed in their individual journeys.” The UConn program launched in January 2022. The small but nimble team of advisers is committed to ensuring higher education opportunities for all students.

Our program is young, but we have already seen the impact that advisers have on postsecondary planning, and college-going culture in the schools we serve. Courtney Witherspoon, Program Director
