Giving Back to Her Community
Camille, a College Advising Corps adviser at UC Berkeley, serves in the same high school from which she graduated. She invited a few former classmates, who had attended various universities across the U.S., to participate on a panel, which she organized for her students. Panelists spoke about their journeys to higher education and their career paths. They shared their experiences about applying to college, choosing the school they decided to attend, and financing their college education. Camille’s students were also given the opportunity to ask panelists questions. Students contacted the panelists after the event to connect with them further. Established in 2007, the UC Berkeley program placed two college advisers in two partner high schools in Solano County. Today, Cal’s program places 59 advisers in 47 high schools in four counties.
I advise because as a first-generation, low-income, student parent of color I know the hardships when pursuing higher education.Brittany Ayala, Adviser, Mt. Diablo High School
